Description

The first half (73km, 1,250m) of the route loops down to Massa Marittima, for a quick visit to the magnificent cathedral and vistas of the coastal plains below. After the smooth descent you take in a brief section of flat riding before you start the return to Montieri, climbing up through the many hill-top ‘borghi’ which frame the panoramic views of Maremma, Tatti, Roccatederighi, Montemassi and Boccheggiano. Gradients average between 4-13%.

The second half is slightly longer (88km, 1,675m) and more lumpy to Serrazzano. The route starts in descent towards Travale before climbing up to Anqua, and remains fairly undulating all the way to Castelnuova di Val. Di Cecina where you may decide to take a brief pause at our recommended stop. The ascent continues briefly before dropping down to the flatter plains before Serrazzano (500m) and take the descent to Lustignano and cross the Fiume Cornia. The climb up to Monterotondo Marittimo is more significant, however once you have conquered this then the home stretch is just an extended cool-down, if the weather isn’t too hot!
