Description

This truly is a remarkable day on the bike in Tuscany. The route takes you north over some historic Giro roads, which often visits Florence. After skilfully avoiding the moped drivers, you are soon out of the city and climbing to Fiesole, a brief warm-up. From there you are headed directly into the straw-bailed Mugello region and towards the Appenines set in the distance. Firenzuola, a small market town deep in the hills is our recommended lunch destination, which comes at half-way and half effort. The amount of climbing should not be underestimated in the heat of summer, so be sure to use the water stops wisely. After a typical regional pranzo you will continue the rest of the climbing to the Passo della Futa and the rapid descent down to the plains of the Mugello farm land, where the Medici once resided in the many castelli also known for ancient Etruscan settlements and archeology. Although close to home, one last climb separates you from Florence. The road back to Fiesole provides stunning panoramic views of Florence, so is well worth a few snaps before you find yourself in front of a glass of Chianti Classico on the hotel terrace.
