Description

This epic day in the saddle from Monticchiello di Pienza takes you south to the border with Lazio but never crossing it. After a couple of initial warm-up climbs you should be ready for the two challenging ascents to Castell’Azzara and optional coffee at 66km, before the recommended lunch stop in Roccalbegna, at over half-effort. The views over southern Tuscany are simply stunning. Roccalbegna is a little known oasis on the Albegna river, interesting for its unique natural rock structures and isolated position. After lunch more varied climbing takes you north towards Castel del Piano as you circumnavigate Monte Amiata. The ‘tiered’ climb of 22km takes on the west slopes of the lava dome all the way to Vivo d’Orcia (with only a few respites), where you start your descent back home, with breath-taking views of the valley below. The last, somewhat trivial climb to Montecchiello and Podere Rigopesci is just a formality after all of your effort of this huge Tuscan adventure. Buon Giro!
