Description

This big assault on Monte Amiata, Tuscanys second highest point Standing at 1743m will be a memorable day on the bike. You will head south on a the flat valley road before climbing up to Campiglia d’Orcia as a warm-up before you arrive in Seggiano, on the west side of Amiata. Once at the foot of the main 19km climb you may need to refuel. This is a climb not to be underestimated. The gradient is consistent between 5-8%. Be sure to take adequate layers as the air can be quite cold at the top even during high summer, and stay warm for the long descent. Lunch may be taken at Refugio Vetta, or you may prefer Il Cantore, just a couple of kilometres down from the summit before the turning for Abbadia San Salvatore. Or, you may prefer a warmer stop back down the mountain in Abbadia S.S. at il Cantinone (see details profile card). We suggest you book ahead to avoid disappointment. After a short climb out of Abbadia the road heads towards Vivo d’Orcia for the sweeping descent off Amiata and into the valley below. The fast and flat run in back to Montecchiello and Podere Rigopesci is concluded by a shallower ascent which is a mere formality to test the legs at the end of such a breath-taking day, literally! We recommend you toast to the days success with a large glass of Montepulciano, Casina di D’Oro 2012 (Canneto), excellently paired with pecorino cheese from Pienza.
